A Brilliant Day for Trekking to Taste!

Oh,  joy.  The day has dawned fair and cool — perfect for a walk or hike on Mt. Tom,  in Vermont’s only National Park! Join the whole community for hikes and activities celebrating active lifestyles (ugh, bad, bad word!) and local food. Food is a lovely word.

I love a good hike or run that features pizza at the end, don’t you? Today is the day for that. Wood-brick-fired pizza at the cabin mid-way up the trails from the National Park Forest Center. Park at the Billings Farm, then go back across Elm Street/Rt. 12 and head immediately to the  right following signs to the Forest Center (Not to be confused with the National Park Visitor Center) for guidance, maps and fun.

Say hi to rangers who will be on hand to help (say what you will about the federal government but this is one of  the best uses of our federal dollars — employing our local friends to help us enjoy the park.)  The locally employed rangers include Scott Davison, Marie Hanson, Julia Lynam  to name a few…What a wealth of knowledge they have as naturalists who can tell you all about the ferns, the birds and the Billings forest where trees were planted to combat erosion after the vast sheep farming-caused deforestation of Vermont in the early 1800’s. These rangers are the real deal, having been educators for years and years and years!
