Trustees Trek to View Possible Snow Dump Site

Village Trustees Trish Compton, Chair Candace Coburn and Bob Pear Visit the Current Snow Dump

Woodstock Village Trustees are moving forward with plans to find a new place to dump snow.

That action might help other pieces fall into place for creation of a  river park and potentially new commercial or residential development in the East End area commonly known as “The Jungle.”

Trustees took their meeting “into the field” Tuesday evening with a visit to the current snow dump along the banks of the Ottauquechee. They then visited a possible location for a new snow dump across the road from the Woodstock Recycling Center near where the annual Apple and Crafts Fair is held.

The land under consideration — just over the bank — is owned by the Woodstock Resort Corporation. It has not been offered by the company as a location for use or for sale. But Trustees have been told that if they present a site plan and the requirements of such a future snow dump the request will be considered.

The Woodstock Resort Corporation had been approached previously about possible use of land the company owns next to the Town sewer plant. However, property abutters told members of an advisory Economic Development Group that they were opposed to the plan for the first location.

Tuesday evening Trustees gave a thumbs up to a “discovery” process of sorts for the second location, including pursuing grants that might help pay for the cost of engineering and site surveys.

Trustees also said they wanted Town Manager to pursue estimates on the cost for demolition of a decaying building on the edge of the current snow dump property.
