Mt. Tom: National Park Summer Forestry Management Operations Begin

Editor’s Note: The  announcement below  is from the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park website: www.nps.gov/mabi. What it means is that you are likely to see logging trucks and other logging equipment as you hike. It’s especially important for your safety that neither you nor your dogs or horses  enter areas that are marked off. Foresters using large, noisy equipment may not be able to hear you or  see you, your dog or your horse. Falling trees and limbs are likely in marked off areas. NPS Park Rangers may or may not be on site to explain what’s going on.  For further information about trail closures, on any given day,  inquire at the MABI NPS Visitor Center front desk.

2011 Forestry Work to Begin on Mount Tom

This year’s forestry operations at the National Park will begin later this month. Forest stands will be thinned by removing some trees and leaving the healthiest to grow. Thinning will help to preserve historic plantations, representative of the evolution of forest management at the park.

The project is expected to take approximately 8 weeks to complete. Temporary trail closures will be required for public safety, but alternate routes will be clearly marked. The Prosper Road parking lot will remain open throughout this year’s forestry work.

A ranger-led tour “The Future of the Forest” exploring the Mount Tom forest history and stewardship will be offered this summer.
