Woodstock Preparing for Possible Category 1 Hurricane

Woodstock Early Bird has just gotten off the phone with Woodstock Town Manager Phil Swanson who says preparations are underway as best as possible to prepare for a Category 1 hurricane to hit Woodstock sometime on Sunday afternoon into the evening.  Swanson and his team are checking updates every 15 minutes on the possible path of the storm. The latest report, according to Swanson  — as of Friday morning — is that we might experience surprisingly calm winds on Sunday morning ahead of the storm.

Right now (Friday morning), Swanson reports road crews are out  checking out culverts and water bars  on town roads to make sure they are clear of debris so water can run off freely. In addition, Swanson says the Sewer Department is being advised  they may be called in to assist with water issues if necessary.  Police, fire and emergency personnel will also be called if downed trees become a problem.

For anyone who does need assistance during the storm, or thereafter, the Town of Woodstock is adding a person to dispatch in order to field calls. The number should anyone have an emergency or situation to report is Woodstock Dispatch at 802-457-2337.  (Write this down, as there is always, OMG, the possibility that we might lose power and if you have a land line, sometimes those wires work just fine!)

And this “just in”  from the Town of Hartford:

Hurricane Irene is scheduled to arrive in the Upper Valley on Sunday, August 28, 2011 through Monday, August 29, 2011. Anticipated four to six inches of rain with high winds. For all emergencies dial 911. Town of Hartford residents dial 295-3232 for all non-emergencies.

    I’m writing from Victoria, Australia.
We have a friend who is working at the YMCA camp there and would like to know what the situation is around the camp area
