Taftsville Covered Bridge Cracking Under Flood Water Pressure

The Taftsville Covered bridge, an oft-photographed quintessential Vermont scene is in danger of destruction due to flood waters. The Ottauquechee River has already overflowed its banks in Woodstock and is also threatening the so-called “Middle Bridge” in the Village which sits directly across from the Woodstock Inn and Resort. Emergency vehicles are posted at the bridges to keep cars and onlookers back from the raging waters which continue to catapult oil tanks picked up along banks heading downstream. Riverside Trailer Park tanks have been swept away, as have farm animals in the area.

Simultaneously, the Kedron Brook in Woodstock has overflowed its banks onto Cross Street, Mechanic Street and Golf Avenues in the Village. The home belonging to Corwin and Priscilla Sharp has been flooded. Cars in the Woodstock Inn administration building parking lot are also under water.
