The Woodstock Farmer’s Market produce and gourmet shop was victim to major flooding Sunday when the Ottauquechee overflowed its banks.
Today, teams of people were trying to sift through debris and produce filling a large dumpster placed in the torn apart parking lot. Employees had looks of resignation on their faces as they consider their jobs may be — at least temporarily — lost.

Julia, people were so pleased to help, both staff and customers. Please don’t put a negative spin on this.

I think moreover people were comtemplating the extent of the damage to towns as well as individual places that people love-like the market- that are in shambles. I think many of the people there today were volunteers -not necessarily employees.
Additionally, please note this sentiment from the WFM facebook page:
” TO OUR WONDERFUL STAFF–HANG IN THERE AND IF YOU WANT TO LEND A HAND AND CAN MAKE IT DOWN, COME ON DOWN. WE WILL HAVE TO FIGURE THINGS OUT WORK WISE–DON’T GIVE UP HOPE.”

That’s correct. Many wonderful volunteers. Meantime, Early Bird did have conversations with several employees who ARE feeling a sense of bewilderment that, at least for the moment, they will not be getting paychecks. Unfortunately, it must be pointed out, part of the fall-out, so to speak, of the flood is going to be unemployement for a lot of people. Again, perhaps temporarily, but there is a whole hourly workforce in town here that, despite all the good will in the world, people are ALSO worried.

I’m sorry that this has turned into a negative and what feels like a stab at the WFM, personally I feel like even though the WFM is my job, I also feel like it’s my home. People at the market have treated me just like family. If my own home wasn’t completely destroyed by the same storm, I would be down there cleaning as well. Even if it wasn’t for money. Just sayin that I think the employees and volunteers should be able to speak for themselves instead of somone else doing it.

so sorry for the ill will spoken…have been with the market 12 years today and through thick and thin, the bad and the ugly I am forever grateful to be part of such a great establishment. there are so many amazing things done outside the market for the community, special organization activities and people individually in need that happen with no ta-do or pomp…this is what is great about us and what adds to the pride of working their with great folks…people help in rough times to help and be busy and serve a purpose not for financial gains or recognition simply to do what is right…my kuddos to all..chin up, pull up your skirt and stick it out for the long run!!!
