Grange Hill Donated for Temporary Playing Field…More Open Fields Needed

Woodstock Early Bird has just gotten off the phone with Emma Schmell who is appealing for anyone with relatively dry open fields that might donate their use for Woodstock school kids to play their games and get exercise. She says even with the Grange Hill area available there is an additional need for back up space. This is all due to the flooding of the Ottauquechee River over the banks behind Woodstock Union High and Middle Schools.

Schmell’s call comes of this heels of this good news from Charlie Kimbell:

Patsy Highberg, of the Grange Hill housing project, earlier today (Friday)  agreed to allow the reclamation of the playing field formerly used by the Woodstock Recreation Center programs and the WUHS/MS programs. The field has laid fallow for some time and will need some work to reclaim it, but it is a very good alternative for the Rec programs and the school programs because of the plight of the playing fields due to the Irene Flood.

Jeff Thomas, the AD at the High School, will be sending his crews to the old “Rock Church” field to begin the work. There is a crew coming from West Point, led by a Bassette brother and current cadet at West Point, to provide whatever assistance is needed. Jeff may put them to use lining the field or preparing it.

Patsy felt like this was the right thing to do for the community and was very quick to agree when asked.
