Emergency Services: Evacuate Again If You Were in Flood Plain Last Sunday

Port-A-Potty, Generator, Pallets of Water Behind Woodstock Emergency Services Building

Woodstock Emergency Services has informed us they suggest strongly to evacuate AGAIN TODAY  if you are in an area that is a flood plain or became a flood plain during last Sunday’s Tropical Storm Irene deluge and flooding.

A week later, tonight, we are to prepare for heavy rains.

As posted earlier, a FLASH FLOOD watch has been posted by the National Weather Service for Sunday evening through Tuesday morning. Also go to www.noaa.gov  for updates.

This suggestion is both for your own safety and for the safety of emergency workers who cannot be everywhere at once and may be prevented from assistance if roads are flooding.

In addition, we are told by an official: NO BURNING.  NO BURN PERMITS.

We know a lot of folks would just as soon light up the debris and get it burned. However, roads are still iffy and if we can reduce any chance of fire, it would help our Fire and Emergency Services  Department to keep their resources for major unplanned  situations.

Here’s the sign at Woodstock Hardware — Note that the Volunteer Operation and For Those Who’d like to Check in For Help is now at the Woodstock Fire Station #2 in West Woodstock. It is no longer at WES.

OH! The Woodstock Chamber of Commerce’s Kathy Avellino let us know that we have a need a for waterproof containers (lots of them) for the folks to store stuff at Riverside Park. Also cleaning supplies of any and all types.

In addition, women’s hygiene products as they are euphemistically referred to. Let’s be CLEAR what this means: TAMPAX  and SANITARY NAPKINS.  And,  while you’re at  it — this is just a Woodstock Early Bird suggestion, not a suggestion from anyone else  — throw in a bottle of Midol or Pamprin or simply a few bottles  of Ibuprofen. Just a friendly aside….for  the sistah’s out there!

Drop off at the Volunteer Building or at the Masonic Temple (which was not open when Woodstock Early Bird passed by).

FEMA: We met a representative of FEMA Broadcast Operations at the Emergency Services Building. He was wearing a dark blue shirt. We were hoping for light blue. In any case, he is here to document response operations and is not involved in the paperwork, but says lots of FEMA folks are on the way.  They are being  based out of Burlington, Vermont.

One response to this post.

    From an Early Bird:

Larry Perry, owner of Woodstock Home and Hardware, has donated 20 or more waterproof plastic containers so people at Riverside Park can store stuff. The containers arrived Sunday afternoon.
