School’s Back…Dump Trucks Going Fast…Vehicular Vantage Points Limited

Good Morning Early Birds,

Kedron Brook behind Early Bird Central here is high but not over the banks. Still raining a wee bit but hopefully no one has been re-washed out. Please let us know if there are new pockets of flooding either on roads or at your place.

Kids ARE going back to school today. School busses will be out on the roads.

Which brings us to our new issue du jour: Truck Traffic. We had a lovely posting about the operation to save a turtle from a dump truck demise. However, we have to worry about the humans, too.

We observed some scary stuff going on outside the new Volunteer Station in West Woodstock. People are parking along the roads, getting out of their vehicles into Route 4 which is now bumper to bumper at times with BIG RIGS BARRELING down upon small wee ones and their parents. Please be careful. Why Woodstock Early Bird herself was doing a turn-around and nearly got smasheroo’d in front of Fire Station #2.  There are LOTS of people walking down Route 4 and parking and stopping and so forth. With school busses out today we have a new bit of traffic. Hopefully Woodstock Police can get down there (as I’m sure they already are) to help reduce “incidents.”

In the Village, the dump truck situation is also getting to a potentially LETHAL point. They’re going waaaay too fast for we scurriers and savers of wildlife.  Received this  note from a Woodstock Early Bird looking for helpful ways to mitigate what will be an ongoing recovery “situation'”:

There are TONS of trucks doing important work. Can’t miss ‘em. But, almost to the person, they are driving WAY, WAY too fast! Over Quechee Gorge where people mill, through town, etc. How about calling Pike industries and other places where they get gravel and have them distribute flyers to the drivers encouraging them to follow the speed limit. And call local police and have them post a sign reminding the drivers and, oh, by the way, school starts (Tuesday)….

Okay, Woodstock Early Birder’s…a lot of worms out there today. Go get ’em. See you at the Emergency Response Meeting and — as far as we know right now — the Governor’s meet-and-greet.

THANK YOU for mentioning the trucks. One passed us going the other direction on RT 4 yesterday going unbelievably fast, it was scary. We are so appreciative of their work, we wave and smile to each and every road worker in thanks and of course we all want the roads completed ASAP, but not when it puts lives at stake.

      Hi Joe,

Head over to the West Woodstock Fire Station #2 and you’ll see all the white boards with needs and where volunteers can be useful. They’ll open up at 10am with a real person (who you probably know!) to direct you in a helpful direction. Also Tambrey Vutech and others are keeping a lot of information flowing through a Facebook page called Woodstock VT Flood Response. But, probably best to just check in at Fire Station #2 — Watch out for the big dump trucks going by on Route 4!
