Flood Victim: Housing Search Reality

Woodstock Early Bird was at a community  meeting earlier this week in which a woman, Kris Potter, identified herself as in a shelter and completely without housing as a result of recent flooding.

After the meeting, we were told she was “all set” for getting a place to live.  Woodstock Early Bird only knows Kris  through her great work and her great sense of humor as a Woodstock Farmer’s Market cashier.

She has now posted this update on her situation to the Woodstock VT Flood Response Facebook  page. We re-print here to show finding a new place to live is not that easy…

Just letting everyone out there who heard that I have found housing that it is not true. There was a possibility of a home in Bridgewater, however I was told that the utilities are very high and I would still have to get approved by SEVCA (Southeast Vermont Community Action)  to get help paying rent. SEVCA does NOT pay for security deposits so that is also an issue. I am staying in a motel still and am NOT in housing. I can’t get into a situation where I am agreeing to pay more than I can afford so I am looking into it. Just wanted to clear up the rumor that I am “all set” as people have stated

Please let Kris know she is welcome to stay in our home in Woodstock until she finds something more permanent. It’s a second home for us and empty most of the time. We would feel privileged to have her use it.

    Thank you.

Robin, What a kind and quick response and offer. We will put the word out. It may be Kris and her daughter. I am not sure. Rep. Alison Clarkson is also helping with getting some sort of legal short-term contract specifically for this sort of situation. Hope this might work out for all involved!

I know of another family that has 3 bedrooms, 1 bath as of last Thursday night, but I would need more info to be able to help. I also have an idea about the security deposit.
