Columbus Day Foliage Weekend Is Underway!

There’s no doubt about it,  the traditionally busy Columbus Day foliage weekend is already well underway. It’s a beautiful sunny day here in Woodstock that began with temps in the 20’s and frost in need of scraping off the windshield.

Now, delightfully breezy and cool which makes it much easier to deal with the throngs, yes, throngs of visitors walking the streets of our lovely Village.

Tours busses and their occupants lined up outside the Mountain Creamery, Daily Grind and Mon Vert Cafe. A tip for we regulars to help our fave food and beverage providers go about their business — and it is business: Let’s move along after being served and so forth  so our out-of-town  visitors have somewhere to eat, drink , sit and um, invest in the local economy.  This is no time for lolly-gagging. We can do plenty of  that in November and March.

Woodstock Early Bird, as she walked Central Street,  even saw people BUYING  things at Heaven Sent and Noushka, in the stores. Our leaves are rather green this year, though not unlovely.  But, perhaps, down the line we might think about an industry not so dependent on a few weekends of hoped-for leaf  colors. We’ll save that for another time.

And yes, one cannot discuss foliage or “Faux-Lidg” (OMG, please don’t say that!) without discussing  traffic.  Yes, there is traffic…If you haven’t been into town yet, well, be prepared.  Or, stay  clear of roads and hunker down at home  to enjoy the rather muted tones of our wet spring and wet summer leaves. It’s much like an Alaskan fall…subtle, not bold.  Speaking of which..we have visitors from all over, including…Alaska! (As seen in the photo of the license plate). WEB Saw these folks in their bright red (T-Bird?)  checking their maps about where they should go next. Obviously,  they are full-on lovers of the road with their RT 66 license plate. And they certainly  know where to be when it’s Fall in Vermont, don’t they?

(Be careful out there! Do your Zen breathing if facing a potentially road-rageous moment)  WEB

hey Julia, thanks for the update on traffic – been there, seen it, but know it will end!
Please help spread the word about a new website http://www.vermontisopen.com that the good folks at Vermont Country Store have launched. It is a listing place for everything that is happening in Vermont. Perhaps some locals would like to travel outside of Woodstock to some other events. Thanks!

It great that so many folks love to visit our beautiful town, but let not forget that it’s our HOME first. I’ve spoken to many store keepers in town that say the tour buses add very little to their business. In fact some have told me that more things get stolen when the buses come in. Remember, it’s our HOME first. I’m not hurrying up for anybody.
