Woodstock Village Trustee Bob Pear wanted Woodstock Early Birds to be aware they are considering selection of some new LED street lights, which are now “on view” at a couple locations in town.
Now, we know there’s not always a lot to do on your average Monday evening or early Tuesday morning and we certainly don’t want traffic jams on our residential streets (Lord, No!) but herewith information if you and yours are out “getting ice cream” and want to do a “drive-by”… WEB
At the last meeting, the Trustees approved the installation of three demo LED streetlight fixtures in the Village to determine if they would be in keeping with the village and our neighborhoods. Some of the issues we are concerned with are color, (cool white vs warm white), glare, and overall brightness.
Replacement of all of the current streetlight utility type fixtures would save approximately $9K on our current street-lighting bill of more than $38K and yield an eye-popping 64% reduction in electricity use.
The cost savings doesn’t match the energy savings because the cost of the fixture itself is included in the daily tariff charged by CVPS, (spread out over time).
Because of the decorative nature of the colonial lantern style pole fixtures that were replaced approximately two years ago, the globe style acorn fixtures in the downtown and east end areas, and the carriage style fixtures on the Green, these fixtures would not be included in this phase of replacement, but would be considered as a separate phase or future phase.
The demo LED street lights were installed on Saturday for our viewing pleasure:
Viewing Platform #1: High St between # 23 and #25.
Viewing Platform #2: River St on either side of the existing LED in front of the cemetery.
I encourage all to take a look at these fixtures at night and provide feedback to the Village Manager or the Trustees.

One thing to keep in mind — and I’m sure the planners are aware of this — is that LED technology is advancing rapidly, and even if warm LED light (2700-3000K) is not currently available in this street-lamp format, it probably will be in a year or two. LED’s are the cutting edge of the lighting industry.

Yes, and their prices are certain to decline significantly.

Street lights are increasingly specified in the 4300 K range. Natural moonlight thought to be better for human and other health at night.

Light at the 23-25 High Street platform is a great improvement. Glare cut down–folks in the front bedroom (next to the streetlight) got a good sleep for the first time! Thanks to Bob Pear!
