Press Release from Hartford Police:
At approximately 1pm today (09-19-12) the Hartford Police Department began receiving 911 calls of an erratic operator.
Witnesses had been following a vehicle on Interstate 89 in Lebanon, NH when the vehicle almost hit other vehicles on the interstate.
The vehicle then began “bouncing off the guardrail” in the witnesses’ words, damaging guardrails along the interstate.
After crossing into VT, the vehicle exited the interstate at exit 1 in Quechee where it again began hitting the guardrail on Route 4.
The vehicle finally struck a guardrail hard enough to disable the vehicle just prior to Hathaway Road in Quechee.
Officers arrived to find a 2007 Mercury Milan operated by a male later identified as 53 year old Kevin Schaner of Rutland, VT.
Schaner appeared highly intoxicated and was belligerent to officers.
Schaner began making furtive movements within the vehicle and refused to listen to officers’ commands to get out of the vehicle, stating he was going to kill the officers.
Officers had to smash a window, pepper spray and physically remove Schaner from the vehicle in order to get him into custody.
Inside the vehicle officers found a few non-prescription containers containing various prescription medications.
After being assessed by Hartford EMT’s, Schaner was transported to DHMC for precautionary measures where he was processed for DWI.
At 6’2, 280lbs it took several officers and EMT’s to maintain control of and load Schaner, who was continually combative and out of control, into an ambulance.
Schaner will be charged with DWI, Resisting Arrest, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Assault on a Police and other possible charges for the pills.
At this time the incident remains under investigation.
