“Voice of Killington” Off the Air

Ski industry sources and The Rutland Herald report that Betty Merrill, a longtime employee of Killington, died this past weekend in Rutland at the age of 89.

She was for years and years and years “The Voice of Killington” as its “old school” switchboard operator and receptionist answering hundreds, if not thousands, of calls every day with a brisk but trilling “Killington!”

Anyone who stopped by Killington’s offices met this wonderful old Vermonter, who, if pressed, could tell many a story about the characters who had populated Killington Mountain since its inception. She was a fount of knowledge and living history of Vermont’s largest ski area.

She was efficient, friendly and knew everyone on the Mountain. We’ll miss her but remember always her bright “Killington!” Her particular distinct delivery still makes us laugh!
