CBS News: Fiber Optic and Economic Development

Here is a story, a well-told story, about a city than needed a turn-around, a big boost. Chattanooga, Tennessee. They did it with long-term planning and vision that centered on installation of fiber optic lines.

The Chattanooga story certainly begs the question whether a fiber-optic infrastructure can be used as a magnet to develop and maintain a knowledge worker-based economy.

If Woodstock could be considered a microcosm of Chattanooga, then we can contemplate the potential economic benefit when Woodstock does have its own fiber-optic infrastructure. Once the ECFiber network is in place, would it be possible to attract more businesses to Woodstock following the example of Green Mountain Digital, Manufacturing Information Systems, and the like?

Could the sustainability of Woodstock be enhanced by achieving an economy based on a marriage of a tourists and knowledge workers?

    Just thinking ahead…

We all chipped in in our neighborhood; and since broadband definitely
will be phased out….we are thrilled to go from boring dial-up to the ‘gold standard.’ Woodstock would benefit immensely.

Regarding Dave’s comment, maybe $50K would be better spent on contributing to a fiber-optic hub in the heart of Woodstock and providing the potential for a broader based economic development beyond our present tourist based economy.

I dont know where the debate or town interest stands on this, but it seems to me an important step to help turn the town into a draw for businesses and relocating families to have fiber optics. I know that a entire road of private citizens in Sharon raised the money to have a non profit fiber optics company install for them. After a year those people get a return on their investment…. Interesting no?
